Wonder what makes a website user-friendly? There are lots of things to remember about during the web design process. Learn what apects influence web usability in order to satisfy visitors and improve user experience.

Web usability is the key to success

What makes a website user-friendly? The answer is web usability. It is an area of User Experience design, which aims to maximize the ease of use of a given website. There are many aspects that determine the user’s comfort, for example: clear and precise presentation of content, which enables to quickly find the information in need, proper placement of elements (eg. menu bar, contact forms, company’s logo) that makes the navigation easier.

Thanks to this, you increase the users’ satisfaction and the possibility that they will visit your page again.

What makes a website user-friendly:

You visit a beautiful page using a laptop, but after you switch to your smartphone, the website loses its organized layout and some elements get cropped. This looks unprofessional, negatively affects the user’s experience, and puts the company in a bad light.

How to avoid such mistakes? Make your website user-friendly through responsiveness, that is, design a web service that adjusts to different screen sizes without losing its original layout.

Effective navigation

Keep it simple. Put navigation elements in places where users expect them to find. For example, menu bars usually appear either at the top of the page, or on one of its sides in the form of a vertical sidebar. Make the navigation consistent – don’t change the location of elements from page to page – otherwise you’ll disorientate the user.

When we look at a group of elements, we try to find patterns. That’s why you should plan where to place empty spaces and where to put similar objects next to each other. Also, it will be easier to navigate your website if you use simple and geometrical shapes.

Presentation of content

If you wonder what makes a website user-friendly, one of the most important things you need to take into account is the presentation of content. In order to display it in a clear and functional way, you need to plan the website’s information architecture. IA is closely related to UX design. It deals with planning and arranging elements to make them understandable to the user. To visualize the skeletal framework of your website, plan its structure in a wireframe.

Remember that well-formatted content is easy to scan. Thanks to this, the users can easily figure out where to look for information they need. If you don’t want to overwhelm the website visitors with the amount of text, balanced it out with the help of eg. icons, graphics, videos.

Fast load times

As trivial as it may sound, the loading time has a tremendous impact on whether the user will decide to stay on your page. According to the Think with Google report, “53% of visits are abandoned if a mobile site takes longer than 3 seconds to load”.

Bloating a website with to many elements slows it down and increases the risk of abandoning it. If your design requires the use of many images, such as graphics and photographs, make sure they’re not too heavy. You can use online JPEG compressors that will minimize the size of files you plan to upload.
